DAY 1 Transfer to Bucharest
Arrival at Otopeni airport and transfer to the hotel in Bucharest. Meet your English speaking guide in the airport and on the way to the hotel he will present you the tour and he will give all the practical information about exchange rates, Romanian food and restaurants. Overnight in a centrally located hotel.
DAY 2 Bucharest – Curtea de Arges – Sibiu
In the morning, after breakfast, leave the hotel for a sightseeing tour and the visit of one of the most impressive buildings in the world, The Parliament’s Palace, also known as The People’s House, the second largest building in the world. During the tour you will see also The Revolution Square, The Opera Square, Victoria Ave and the Triumphal Arch. Leave Bucharest and drive to Curtea de Arges, the former Capital of Wallachia. Visit the two old churches (St. Nicholas, part of the Medieval Royal Court and Curtea de Arges Monastery, where the first 3 Romanian kings are buried). Before crossing the highest part of the Carpathian mountains - over 6000 feet -, on Transfagarasan road, stop at Poienari and eventually visit of the fortress of the prince Vlad the Impaler. There are though 1500 steps to climb to get to the fortress!!! - this road is open only from July to the end of September and for the rest of the season we use the road on Olt Valley. In the evening, arrival in Sibiu and accommodation in a centrally located hotel.
DAY 3 Sibiu - Alba Iulia - Turda Salt Mine - Cluj Napoca
In the morning, we visit the center of the medieval Sibiu, founded by the saxon settlers and known also as Hermannstadt. The walking tour will bring you to the Small Square, the Liar’s Bridge, the Big Square and to the Lutheran Cathedral. Departure for Alba Iulia, the town of the Unification of the Romanian old States and visit the Orthodox Cathedral of the Unification and the old fortress. In the afternoon we visit Turda Salt Mine, one of the most impressive salt mine in Europe, recently restored by the government. Arrival in the evening in Cluj, the Capital of Transylvania, and accommodation in a centrally located hotel.
DAY 4 Maramures (Cluj-Napoca - Baia Mare - Vadu Izei)
In the morning we leave Cluj Napoca, after a walking tour in the city center and drive north to the most picturesque region of the country, Maramures. On the way to the beautiful village of Vadu Izei, visit several traditional villages and wooden churches, like Surdesti, Desesti and Budesti. Accommodation in a comfortable B&B and enjoy a typical Maramures dinner.
DAY 5 Maramures
We will visit the area, interact with the locals, try their food and culture, discover their traditions, admire the beautiful wooden gates. We will also visit the unique Merry Cemetery from the village of Sapanta, the Museum of the Victims of the Communism from Sighetu Marmatiei, the Village Museum from the same town. Dinner and overnight in Vadu Izei, the same location.
DAY 6 Maramures - Bucovina
We leave Maramures, but before that, we cross the beautiful valley of the river Iza where we can visit some more wooden churches, like Rozavlea, Bogdan Voda and Ieud (the oldest wooden church from Maramures - XIVth century), then we cross Rodna mountains, the old natural border between Maramures and Moldova. We stop in the village of Vama for an egg painting demonstration (at Mrs Letitia, the greatest egg painter from the region) and then we visit Voronet Monastery, known as the Sisteen Chapel of the East, the most beautiful painted monastery from Bucovina. Accommodation in a hotel from Gura Humorului.
DAY 7 Painted Monasteries
We complete our knowledge about the painted monasteries with another 3 of them: Moldovita, Sucevita and Arbore, all of them being UNESCO World Heritage Sites and the museum of Moldovita Monastery keeps the award given by UNESCO in 1975, the Golden Apple. On the way to Piatra Neamt, we can stop at Agapia Monastery (only 19th century, but painted by the greatest Romanian painter, Nicolae Grigorescu). Accommodation in Piatra Neamt.
DAY 8 Piatra Neamt – Sighisoara
After breakfast we leave the town and we come back in Transylvania, crossing the spectacular Bicaz Gorges. After the Red Lake is a region inhabited by a large Hungarian community, that’s why the names of the towns are written in two languages. In the afternoon, we arrive in Biertan, the former residence of the Lutheran Bishops of Transylvania, and we visit the fortified church, the most beautiful church of this kind in Romania. In the evening, we arrive in Sighisoara and stay in a hotel situated in the medieval fortress.
DAY 9 Sighisoara – Brasov
In the morning we visit Sighisoara, the best preserved medieval town in Romania. During the walking tour, we visit the Church on the Hill, the Clock Tower and Vlad Dracul’s House, the place where in 1431, the famous prince Vlad the Impaler (Dracula) was born. Leave Sighisoara and drive to Bran, where you visit the medieval castle known as Dracula’s Castle, one of the highlights of this trip. Free time for shopping and departure for Brasov, one of the most beautiful cities of Transylvania. Accommodation in a hotel in the old town.
DAY 10 Brasov – Sinaia – Bucharest
Visit in the morning the old town of Brasov, including the biggest gothic cathedral from the south east of Europe, the Black Church and the amazing museum of the First Romanian School from Schei. Departure for Sinaia, to visit the summer residence of the first royal couple, Peles Castle, one of the most beautiful palaces in Europe. After this visit we come back in Bucharest for the farewell dinner in a traditional restaurant where we will enjoy the best Romanian dishes and a quality folk show. Accommodation in a hotel in the city center.
DAY 11 Transfer to the airport / end of our services
