Danube Delta

The Danube River is the only river on Earth that passes through 10 countries - Germany, Austria, Slovakia, Hungary, Croatia, Serbia, Romania, Bulgaria, Moldova, Ukraine, and four capital cities - Vienna, Bratislava, Budapest and Belgrade. The Danube flows into the Black Sea via the Danube Delta which, including the lagoon complex of Razelm – Sinoe, has a total area of approximately 5050 km2, out of which 732 km2 are in Ukraine.

The Danube's Branches

The Delta starts to emerge from Patlageanca village, where it is divided into two branches, Chilia at North and Tulcea to the South. The latter is divided in Sulina and St. George, after passing Tulcea city.

Chilia Branch, 104 km* long, marks the border with Ukraine, and carries about 60% of the Danube`s water and silt. For this reason the Danube Delta annual increase in area by 40 square metersduring the Spring season. Along the Chilia Branch there are the villages Palazu, Pardina, Chilia Veche and Periprava.

Sulina Branch, with a length of 71 km*, crossing the Delta with a linear course, is very good for the navigation of maritime ships. It is permanently dragged and carries only 18% of the Danube`s water. On Sulina Branch there are the villages Ilganii de Sus, Maliuc, Gorgova, Crisan, Vulturu, Partizani and  Sulina city.

St. George Branch has a length of 112 km*, facing southeast, carries 22% of the Danube's flow and when flowing into the Black Sea forms the islands of Sacalin, considered a secondary delta. On this branch there are the villages of Nufaru, Mahmudia, Uzlina and St. George.

*Other sources state that Chilia is 120 km, 64 km Sulina and Sf Gheorghe 108 km.

Flora and Fauna

Because of the 5149 flora and fauna species, specialists consider the Danube Delta a veritable gene-bank for the Universal Heritage. However, it should be noted that here live the great majority of the European Common Pelican populations (about 8,000 of them) and Curly Pelican (200 of them); 60% of the world population of Pygmy Cormorant (6,000 of them); 50% of the world population of Red Breasted Goose (during the winter there are about 40,000 of them). Besides all that, there are 1,200 species of trees and plants. Everywhere one looks, he sees floating holms covered in rush and reed, lianas like in the tropical forests, lakes with muddy depths and surfaces covered with water lilies.

Places and opportunities for fishing

The first document of the Danube Delta by Herodotus describes Darius` Persian fleet entered the Delta, after a stop in Histria (515-513 B.C.). Testimonials about people inhabiting the area appear only in the first century B.C. Today, besides the villages along the branches, we can mention Patlageanca, Maliuc, Mila23. Sulina is the only town in the Delta, it is a free port, used mainly for transhipment. Besides the ship yards, there is also a fish cannery.

The fishing enthusiasts choose Crisan Channel for bream, perch, roach, pike or catfish (in the morning). At Mila23 one can fish for smolt and at Fortuna for rudd, perch, carp and even pike.
